The continent experienced some drastic changes in leadership 2017 and 2018, as some of the longest reigning leaders have resigned from their positions of power.
Angola’s Jose Eduardo dos Santos, after 38 years as president, resigned in August 2017. 93-year-old Robert Mugabe was forced to resign after a 37-year reign as Zimbabwe’s president. On February 14 2018, Jacob Zuma stepped down as president of South Africa. Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn resigned on February 15 2018.
